Sustainable Livelihoods

Strengthening livelihoods of people is one of the core areas in which PANI works. Providing for the physical and social well being of the communities and security against impoverishment is the main objective. This year we have worked for agriculture based livelihoods, skill enhancement and enterprise development. In select areas, we are also creating enabling conditions for migrant labour and families since it has been on the rise despite all limitations.

Through a program called FASAL (Farmers’ Action for Sustainable Agro Based Livelihoods) we are working with 9 partner organisation spread across 8 districts. Sustainability and viability in true harmony with nature are the core principles of the agri based livelihood initiatives.

5178 farm families in these areas now have increased income security and access to safe, healthy and nutritious food. In a period spanning two years, a family families on an average has realise an additional income of INR 4917.

We also introduced technologies to reduce stress of women farmers. Use of conoweeder and wheel hoe specially reduced the stress involved in weeding which is primarily done by women.

Around 3500 women in Lucknow, Faizabad and Mau have started new enterprises and are successfully managing them so as to earn better incomes out of their labour. Some of these enterprises are related to dairy, goatery, agriculture and others to tailoring and driving.

About 350 youth participated in various skill training programmes ranging from tailoring and repair of mobile to household wiring and computer programming. They now have increased confidence and employability.

PANI is also working with VOSCATs and those who are vulnerable to be pushed into the profession. To strengthen alternative sources of livelihood for them, PANI has facilitated their collectives and organised entrepreneurship training for them. The confidence, the knowledge and the skills they gained has encouraged several of them to start their own enterprises.

To encourage speedy adoption of relevant practices and technology, we facilitate videography of real time technology usage and then showing it at other places. It is the women and girls from the community who are trained in shooting, editing and screening the video films.
